John PickeringParticipantKia ora. I’m keen on promoting dark skies where I can. Yesterday I had a motion passed at the AGM of the Anglican Parish of Burnside-Harewood Christchurch for it to become a Dark Sky parish. It was passed unanimously. Yeah! Small steps I know, but it got me thinking if we all took to our sports clubs, service clubs, religious organisations, schools etc a motion to become dark sky friendly then perhaps we could make a real difference.
Let’s share some ideas about how to make this happen.

AnonymousInactiveThanks John. It’s a slow growth area of educating the general public of the small things they can do within their own area of influence for control of light pollution.
You may not be aware that I hold the position of Dark Sky Coordinator for CAS and this area is under discussion. Your comment is a timely one to remind us to put this back on the agenda. Thanks Trace

John PickeringParticipantI hadn’t picked up on that position – great!
On a personal note, I’m building a house and am wanting to have a light outside so that I can get from the back door to the observing area (or washing line) without tripping. I’m having trouble finding lights with red leds/bulbs that are suitably hooded. It would be great if people know of such things they could share them.

Mindful of the previous message a red light in front of a house used to represent :). I can’t remember from where we got them from? Either Bunnings or Mitre 10. Probably the former since I looked for them in Mitre 10 last week. Verve brand with bayonet fitting. Make sure the shielding of the outdoor light is below the horizontal.
I noted on a post by Ian Griffin that his place has very bright outdoor white lights so maybe someone could send him a couple :). Though I am led to believe that white light is easier to remove in astrophotography post processing then red :).Lighting is a pretty big topic. I will need committee permission, and a review, before I can present a consolidation of recommendations.

AnonymousInactiveRe house. Do you have a lighting designer for your home build? Not recommending myself, but some thought now could save some pain later.
