As most of you will be aware, long time member and friend Malcolm Flain passed away last month. His cheerful enthusiasm for life and its many curiosities will be greatly missed. He was always happy to share stories and show photos of his many telescopes. Many of us will have had the chance to see, or to look through some of his well make instruments. Many of these are quite unique and are a tribute to Malcolms eye, skill and curiosity.

His daughter, Cath, is in the process of sorting out his estate. Malcolm had a great deal of stuff, and most of it will be going to auction in a few weeks. I’ll post details here closer to the date. There will be an opportunity to view the many items at the auction house before the auction.

While most of the smaller items including binoculars and camera gear is already packed in a container for transport to the auction, the telescopes are still at Malcom’s place, and we are hoping that they can be sold and picked up before the auction.

Below is a catalogue of the remaining items:

Any reasonable offers. We want it gone to a good home 🙂 Get in quick!

What a legacy…I would be very interested in the Edmund Scientific “Astroscan” 105mm f/4.2, 28mm Edmund eyepiece – how do I discuss my interest?

    Thanks, P

That astroscan is a great scope! I’m organising a visit for interested people to have a look, or I can reserve it for you.

I’d guess $100-$200 would be a fair price? Some people are asking much more on ebay, but asking and selling are different things 🙂

    Thanks, P

Hey Rob, a friend (non CAS member tho but keen astronomer) was wondering if the ‘114mm x 500mm f/4.4 Newtonian on EQ1 with basic motor drive. 26mm EP. Ball mount on side for camera. includes Fuji Finepix S5600 camera (2005, 5 MP, USB, XD card (missing), AA batteries) 6.3-63mm zoom (10x, 5-50 degrees wide). f/3.2-f/8’ is still available? If ‘yes’ he wud be happy to buy it n was not sure of price…could you let me know? Thanks, P

Nice little scope. Wide field views with 26mm eyepiece.

The camera is pretty old, but the cards and readers are still available on ebay, and it takes AA batteries, not no issues with finding old rechargables. It does RAW format as well. https://www.dpreview.com/articles/1746993686/fuji-s5200zs5600z

I reckon it would be a pretty reasonable camera tracker for getting into wide field astrophotography.

The scope alone would go for $200 on trademe, camera $80?  Add motor and better eyepiece.

    How about $200 all up?

    Cool!

At this stage we can only call these “offers”. They are not mine to sell. I’m just getting the word out there, drumming up interest and helping to price them.

It is up to the familly to accept the offers. There’s been a complication between family members, but hopefully it will all work out. There may be delays.

    All offers have been acepted!

In the end I have offered to take the remaining telescopes at a fair price, but I can’t keep them all (or afford to)! Most are still for sale.

I will pick them all up tomorrow (Sunday) and move them to my garage and spare room.

You are most welcome to contact me to pick up the ones you want from Malcolm’s place tomorrow (Sunday), or just to have a look, and help with the move!

After that you can pick them up from my place.

I will pay Cath for the whole lot so you can settle up with me directly.

Hey I’m interested in the 180mm Mack with the EQ6, the 6″ f/5 and also the possibility of buying the 6inch rings if possible.

Do you have any prices in mind for these items?
