At the End of the Earth:  How and Why We Study the Universe from the South Pole

    🗓 Date: Saturday, 7 November 2026
    🕛 Time: 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
📍 Venue: Antarctic Passenger Terminal, International Antarctic Centre (see attached google map)

Amy Lowitz is a staff scientist at the University of Arizona, where she works on the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT).  Dr. Lowitz’s work focuses on hardware development and operations for these telescopes.  She oversees EHT observing for the continental US and Antarctica, and is also Principal Investigator of ASPIRE, a project to field a new receiver for EHT on the South Pole Telescope.  ASPIRE will deploy for the first time this season at the South Pole.  In her lecture, Dr. Lowitz will discuss how and why we study the universe from the South Pole — what telescopes are at the South Pole, what they are looking at, and why it is worth it to build these instruments at the literal End of the Earth.  She will discuss the South Pole microwave telescopes, SPT, EHT, and BICEP, and will also touch on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, recent recipient of the Nobel Prize.

A talk for all audiences.  Everybody is welcome, please feel free to forward this email!

Also save the date for Saturday Dec 12 at 3pm for our second 2026 Antarctic Summer Science Lecture, Dr. Byron Adams.

The Antarctic Passenger Terminal is located in the International Antarctic Centre Complex off of Orchard Road, see circled building on map.
The Antarctic Summer Science Lecture Series is jointly sponsored by the NZ Antarctic Society, Gateway Antarctica, and COMNAP.  Thank you also to the US Antarctic Program for providing space for this event.
