Our monthly meeting is back in the Ernest Rutherford Building, room 225.

Starting with the New Astronomers talk on “Black Holes”

The main meeting speaker is Karina Leppik speaking on GMTNIRS: A New Infrared Window on the Universe.

Abstract: GMTNIRS, the Giant Magellan Telescope Near-Infrared Spectrograph, is a powerful new spectrograph being developed as a first generation instrument for the Giant Magellan Telescope. In this talk, we will explore both the science that GMTNIRS will enable—from the earliest galaxies to planets around nearby stars—and the innovative design that makes those observations possible.

Bio: Karina Leppik is the GMTNIRS Systems Engineer, bridging the GMTNIRS science and engineering teams and the Giant Magellan Telescope project.  Karina previously worked on SOFIA, as a Mission Director and Science Flight Planner.  She currently lives in Christchurch with her family.
