Cameron McEwingParticipantIf you have a DSLR, and you are interested in learning how to do variable star photometry this public Zoom webinar by the AAVSO might be just what you are looking for…
How to Do Variable Star Photometry With Your DSLR”
Dr. Barbara Harris
Sat, March 6th (US), Sun March 7th 8am-9am (NZ)
Many astronomers have a DSLR and use it for general photography and astrophotography. I would like to encourage you to use your DSLR to contribute to science by measuring the brightness of variable stars.

Rob GlasseyModeratorThanks Cameron,
As I understand it, this can be done from a light polluted back yard with only the camera and camera lens?

Cameron McEwingParticipantYes, that’s right. Light polluted skies, a DSLR, and a lens. There is actually a detailed manual here…
The introduction states …
“You’re out jogging one night in your usual park. It’s dark, but you know the area well, so you don’t have a
fear of running into anything. Tonight turns out to be different, though. As you jog you notice someone
just off the path with a camera on a tripod. Strangely, you notice that both her gaze and her camera are
pointed up, right up to the sky above. You glance up at the sky as you jog past seeing just the brightest
points of light in your light-polluted sky. What could she be doing? In this case, the woman, who is a High
School history teacher by day, is performing measurements on the brightness of certain stars, data that
will be of use and interest to professional astronomers. She’s one of a growing breed of people called
“citizen scientists.” This manual will show you how you can participate as well.”-
