AnonymousInactive- I was on a photo shoot of Justice Precinct last Tuesday night, Sept 25th, and I noted that the moon came up directly down Lichfield street. I had spotted a similar even the week before when I was there at at 6.30am and saw the sun do the same thing. Following on with a discussion else where with Marc it then occurred to me that this was the equinox and I found it rather interesting these events should coincide. Granted this is more a discussion for an historical Architect/City planner as this process of structural element layout has been noticed down through the ages. It does make made me wonder if the city planners deliberately laid out the central street pattern with the equinox in mind.
- It was bought to my attention that there is a common word usage of saying when heading south we say we are going down and heading north we are going up. Now I put this thought to my friend. ‘What constitutes whether something is up or down when dealing with north and south?’ In my way of thinking it was who was in power political when those terms were put to use. British Empire and United States of America comes to mind. But in essence it means nothing doesn’t it? We are not going up or down, for there is no up or down in space. What makes us continuously present the earth as up the way it is in photos from out of space? Same thing? Because NASA says so? So our perspective on the solar system is also this way up. Jupiter is the way up it is as perceived view correlating that the top of the Milky Way is ‘up’. Thank goodness when we leave the Milky way the influence of the super powers dissipates 🙂

AnonymousInactive- I would think that some cities and their main streets were designed to go directly NSEW to make navigating the city easier not to make them align with the sun and moon.
- My thought on what is up and down would be that boats and ships needed to know which way they were going so they came up with the terms North, South, East and West. I would guess the ‘top’ of the planet being North is because why would those people have assumed they were at the bottom.
All my guesses though could be completely wrong.
