I was a bit lucky with this one!
I’ve been playing with my new ASI385MC tonight (first light!) and just before I packed up I thought I’d have a quick look at Jupiter and Saturn.
Without the barlow, viewing live, I though I could see a dark spot. After checking Stellarium I saw a transit of Io was almost over. The seeing hadn’t been great tonight, and I was only using my 6″ which is not normally a great planetary scope, but I thought I’d have a go anyway. I quickly grabbed the barlow, focused and did a single quick run of 2000 images (at 100 frames per second). I put that into Autostakert and was amazed at what I saw! After a bit more processing with Registax this was the result.
It’s not the sharpest I’ve done, but you can’t beat the composition! I love the clear disk of Io just popping out from the side of Jupiter, the shadow so close, the red spot and other details that just make it work for me! This is definitely the best transit I’ve imaged.
Jupiter has just passed opposition, which is why the shadow is so close to the moon.

Back yard observing at it best!
