Taken on Sunday 27th from my back yard with Malcolm’s 150mm f/10 refractor, unfiltered full aperture, with Malcolm’s Herschel Wedge, a polarizer, ND3.0 filter, Astronomic planetary IR 642nm filter, and an ASI178MM camera. 10% of 2000 images, stacked with Autostakker 3.0 and sharpened with Registax. False colour added later.
“Don’t try this at home!”
Yes, that’s a 150mm lens pointed at the sun and focused on the Herschel Wedge. The wedge reflects only 6% of the light, making it safe to use other filters after that. The wedge has a heat sink with “caution hot” written on it, and it got hot! You can actually smell the photons!
This was my first attempt with the 6″, and only one run on an average day, late in the afternoon, but I’m impressed!
This is a massive step up from the 70mm with the wedge, and even that was a big step up from the 70mm with the Baader Solar film.
I can see this coming out again 🙂

Rob GlasseyModeratorThanks!
That’s a pretty amazing set up. There are moments when I can see this detail in the eyepiece!
