Neil HeslopParticipantHello,
Relatively new member just starting to acquire gear. Does anyone have advice on the usual/best places to buy gear?
The two most visible marketplaces are Jacobs Digital and AstroNZ from what I can see. Where do people acquire gear otherwise if they don’t have what you want? Any advice on overseas websites that are reputable to bring gear in from, be it Australia, the US, or elsewhere?

Rob GlasseyModeratorHi Neil,
Welcome to CAS!
Yes, the two main outlets in NZ are Astronz and Jacobs. Both have been great supporters of CAS.
Astronz operates as a charity and makes donations to astronomy clubs and events. If you let them know you are with CAS when buying something from them, they will make a donation to CAS (currently 5% of the sale). You can also use the code AS-CAS to let them know you’re with CAS, although this code does not provide a discount.
Here in Christchurch, Nature discoveries carries a limited range of astronomical gear and accessories. Worth a look to see what is available locally, and see what deals can be done.
In Australia there are Bintel and Testar, both in Sydney. They both ship to NZ and are regularly used by our members.
In the US there is OPT, High Point Scientific, and Agena Astro. All are used by our members.
You can also buy direct from ZWO and Explore Scientific. Both these suppliers have been good supporters of CAS.
I hope this helps.

Neil HeslopParticipantThanks for the information Rob – much appreciated. I will bookmark all those sites and go window shopping!
Good to know about the codes for AstroNZ.
